Is Your Book a YIGI?
Have you ever read a book that you kind of understood, but that you also kind of didn't understand? Me too. That is what a call a "Not-so-swell Fit" book.
What about a book that you TOTALLY and COMPLETELY understood? I call that a "Just Right Fit"(or YIGI book: Yes I Get IT!). I like those kind of books
Please show with words (give us visuals: details and examples) how you know if you are REALLY and TRULY understanding a book? What does it feel like, look like in your mind when you are really getting the author's message, who the characters are, and the book's deeper meaning.
If you share your stories, I'll share mine. :)
1.) Give an example, with DETAILS of a YIGI book. Prove it.
2.) Give an example, with DETAILS of a non-YIGI book. Prove it.
3.) Make sure you ELABORATE and PROVE it.

O.K. Because I learned how to read at age 4, I thought I was a pretty "Hot Stuff Reader" growing up. I'll admit it...embarrassing at it it!
So, one day I was in 1st grade and I was reading a 4th grade book, by Laura Ingalls Wilder called, On the Banks of Plum Creek.
I actually THOUGHT it was a YIGI book because when I was reading it I was making a movie. I could say all of the words, but I didn't ALWAYS know what they meant. I could picture the characters, I could picture the banks of Plum Creek and Laura's house and family. But sometimes, I have to admit, my movie was a little fuzzy and I always couldn't relate to some of the things Laura was feeling or going through. I didn't get why she would say or act or do some of the things she did. BUT, I THOUGHT I got it! Weird, huh!
Well, it wasn't until I was in 4th grade that I read On the Banks of Plum Creek again and all of a sudden I really, REALLY GOT IT!
As a 4th grader, all of a sudden I was close to Laura's age and NOW I got why she acted the way she did and said the things she said. Also, when I read the book as a 4th grader, it felt like I was a character INSIDE of the book. When I read On the Banks of Plum Creek as a 1st grader, I was really just a passenger in a car driving by and watching the scenery and the characters.
I have read and still try to read a lot of non-YIGI books. For instance, if I can't make a movie in my head (the WHOLE time), or I don't know a lot about the topic I am reading, or if I can't connect it to my life or the world, or if I don't know a lot of the words and I can't figure them out by using context (reading around the words and using clues from the text), then I get frustrated, I can't stay focused and I abandon the book because it is not a good fit for me.
Mrs. Parent,
Once I read Shredderman. My eyes were glued to the book. It was a YIGI book to me because I could picture being Nolan. I kinda wanted to be Nolan at the time. I also understood it. Me n my friend Evan were both reading it at the same time we both laughed at parts, we talk about together.
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was a non-YIGI book for me. When I first started to read it I thought it was kind of a YIGI book, but then Ms. Parent starting asking me questions about the characters and I couldn't answer them. I didn't really get it. I started to get that I wasn;t getting it.
Miss Parent,
I had the same thing happen to me a few times. It was when I first started Michigan Chillers. I had no clue what it meant so I stopped reading them. So then I started adventure books. But as I got into 4th grade the Michigan Chillers became popular. So I started it again. Through the school year they were more of a (YIGI book than I don't get it book). I love Michigan Chillers books now.
Mrs Parent, I had a experience that I had was with a book called Gigi and I know that it's a YIGI book because I have read it about 3 or 4 times and I really like it I took the time to read it and I thought about it and it really is a fun book. I think you should read it. I knew that harry potter was a NON-YIGI book because I was not getting a movie in my head and I was not understanding the words I could not read them and that book is not for me.
Mrs. Parent,
I have the same problem! I read a book too fast and don't get it or I'm not old enough for the book. Like one time, I was reading a book called Maddigans Fantasia, my sister had told me it was a great book and that I should read it.I started reading the book but, I didn't get at all.I returned it and got a different one that WAS on my reading level.Maybe next year I'll try reading it again, and this time I'll get it.:)
Ms.Parent,
I read Matilda and think it is a partial YIGI book to me. It was kind of YIGI because got what the author, Roald Dahl was thinking.I also kind of got it. A movie was going in my head, but not all of the time. I think if I reread it now, it would be a YIGI book now. I could really get it.I read it last year, so yeah.
Mrs. Parent,
I had an experience like yours. I was reading a book and I thought I understood it but I didn't. When my dad asked me to explain it I could not. Thats how I know it's not a YIGI book.
Mrs. Parent,
I have have that same thing that you had because the Michigan Chillers have a lot of feeling in it and Johnathan Rand's I think is a great book writer. It's a yigi book for me because I really get it and to me it makes sense to me and I can make a movie in my head. But I think he as in the writer and thats how I know thats a yigi book.
Ms.Parent,
The Thousand Paper Cranes is a Yigi book to me. At first I thought wow this is a really hard book. I new it was a Yigi book because I knew most of the things like: I knew a lot about world wore 2. I had movies in my head. When I started reading it I really got it a little more. Like I knew more about the atom bomb and I learned that even if you weren't born then you could still get the dieases like Sadako had.
Ms. Parent,
American Chillers is a Yigi book because they stay on the big idea
and made a movie in my head the whole time I was reading. Johnathan Rand is a good author. I understood the characters and how they acted. I would have been scared if an Iguana attacked me. I sometimes felt like I was inside of the book.
Junie B. Jones is a non-YIGI book its to confusing for me because I can't really get into it. I am not even interested in her.
Dear Ms.Parent,
The YIGI book I understand would be "THE TALE OF DESPERAUX". It's a really great book about a tiny mouse who falls in love with Princess Pea. I had a big movie in my head the whole time I was reading it:).
My Non-YIGI book is "SANTA PAWS". I couldn't make a movie in my head while I was reading and it didn't really make sense to me. I know it's about a puppy who doesn't know where his brothers and sisters are along with his mother. But I don't get the rest at all!!:(
Ms. Parent,
I thought the first four years was a YIGI book because I thought and felt like I was Laura myself. And I also got the feeling when something was either wrong or going to go wrong.
Dontrell,
Tell us how the Michigan Chillers series is NOW YIGI for you. Give us details and examples.
Dear Zack, I would like to know about "ShredderMan". Explain it to me. Please give me some examples.Tell me more about the characters that are in the story. Do you think girls would like this book too?
Zack,
I really like how you explained how Shredderman was a YIGI book for you and how The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was not.
Great examples and details. I am happy that you are being more metacognitive about which books are YIGI and which books are non-YIGI
Dontrell,
Give me an example of a time when you knew it was a YIGI book. For example were you getting a movie in you're head or being able to read the words well.
Dear Kariana, Will you at least tell me what you know about the book?I can relate to you ,I read "Sister Hood of the Traveling Pants" and I didn't get it at all:( But what I do get is that there were 5 girls around the world who are friends. One day they go to the store and find some pants. They all tried it on... and it fit all of them.
Julianna,
Will you please bring the Gigi book for me to see? I'd like to borrow it. Kid's recommendations are the BEST!
What was so great about Gigi? The characters? Did you feel like you were a character inside of the book?
It is interesting what you wrote about Harry Potter. Many times kids think they can read Harry Potter because they have seen the movie. The Harry Potter series is a very challenging series. I think that if kids would read it with their parents, they would understand the characters and the vocabulary a lot better. I also worry about kids that are too young reading it without parent supervision, because it can be dark at parts and scary.
My nephews are in 3rd and 5th grade and read like crazy, but their parents decided to read Harry Potter with Nico (the 5th grader) because they were worried about some of the darker parts. He just finished: Invention of Hugo Cabert, The Peter and the Starcatchers series, and Dragon Rider. :)
Mrs.Parent
Well my friend David told me that Michigan Chillers were very good. So he gave it to me and I read a paragraph. He asked for it back but I keeped on reading. But then I gave it back. On library I checked out 1 and it was fabulous. That's how I new it was a YIGI book!
Sophia
I also read Matilda in 3rd grade. It was kinda YIGI but I think I would get it more now than I did in 3rd grade. Even I saw the movie I was confused in the book sometimes. I was
confused at the Bruce Bogtrotter part.
I had a hard time picturing what was happening when Ms. Conway read it to the class.
I read a book that was good and funny. It was from the Mallory series. I think it was Mallory and Max. I could make a movie in my head,it was cool.It was a YIGI book for me. It does have series of books too and I read the other books. It was about a girl and her cat, Cheeseburger. I liked how it was written because it was fun and I could relate to the main character, Mallory. Sometimes I felt like I was inside of the book.
Dear Juliana, Tell how it is a YIGI book. I would like to know about the characters in the story and give an example of what the book is about. Can you relate to the characters in th story?
Kendra,
Give me an example of how you know that it was a YIGI book. For example you were geting a movie in your head.
Ms.Parent,
George Washington Carver was not a YIGI book to me. I know because when I read it I didn't get a picture in my head I didn't really get what was happening and I didn't get a movie. Maybe if I read it next year I will get it. Maybe it was a non_YIGI book for me because I am not interested in reading about scientists....
I think the non-YIGI book for me is the Michigan Chillers Terror Stalks Traverse City. I didn't really get it because it changed the subject a lot. It was kept going on and it kept saying the same things over and over. It was weird too because the book would go from being on the main subject to a different one. I couldn't keep a movie in my head.
Dear Dontrell, Tell me, what is the first book of Michigan Chillers you ever read? The first book I ever read was "Gargoyales of Gaylord" and it was a great story!
Dontrell,
II understand how Michigan chillers starts off as a non yigi book but then when you get in to it it's cool because when you start off there kinda realign you in the book like a fish. Ten at the end your like wow then when your done it starts on a whole new story so your story kinda connects.
Kendra,
I have read The Tale of Desperaux and I really liked it too.I could get a movie in my head. It felt like I was attached to it. It was a fun and interesting book.
Kendra, the story is about Garland and her family, who own a circus,I didn't find out the rest sense I stoped reading the book.:)
Kendra
Yes I do think girls would like Shredderman. Its about this kid named
Nolan who gets picked on by the bully. He makes a website and tries to get him back. Nolan makes weird stuff
on the website about the Bully.
Mrs. Parent I will ask my mom if I can but I might no be able to. Gigi is one of my favorite character. I will finish later.
Mrs. Parent
Matilda was a YIGI book to me. I love
the book Matilda. I had a movie in my head the whole time. I didn't want to stop reading. None of the characters
were quite like me but I understood
all of them and there problems. A non YIGI book to me was Snow Tresure. I was always asking myself what was going on. Now I know it's not a YIGI
book for me!
